(A)Meeting i(s)lands on Zoom

Updated: Sep 16, 2020

Two sets of friends who we haven't seen each other in a while, connect in a creative collaboration where lockdown time becomes a valuable asset to the survival of our creative practice during a pandemic.

Our first task was to discuss what we are interested in exploring for this project via Zoom at times we where both awake.

The time for us to chat throughout the project became between 630pm - 8pm, NZ time and 9am -1030am, Finnish time. We found themes and concepts to be open-ended.... and could be translated into movement, writing, filming, dancing and thinking practices that are improvisational, experiential and choreographic.

Tasks that came out of our conversations:

  • Gathering costumes - billowy shirts and pants, layers

  • Hands interacting with different elements, earth, wind, water, fire, metal.

  • Hands touching me - Healing hands how do we experience touch. Feeling each other through the earth.

  • Searching for places where water meets land, where land meets body

  • thresholds, passageways, liminal spaces, time

  • Dig to the other side of the wall, earthing, lying naked, being buried in the land

  • Putting things in the earth, pulling things out of the earth

  • Being with the sun - following its movement, being with sunset/sunrise as experiential practices

  • A movement for the day in the same place everyday- photograph a moment,

  • Film some of it from an unusual point of view, archive the effects you have on the space or just record the the different states of the day in the same frame everyday.

  • Map your movement for a couple of hours - a whole day, movement lineage...

  • A time map, a star map, a map in relation to a still point, sky-map, landform-map, internet-map, emotional-map.

  • Mapping hour-for-hour time difference between NZ and Finland (and personal), and what we are doing in those times.

  • Describing a place in our environment verbally or written, and sending this to the other. They find a place that translates from this description. Is it a physical/visual description? Experiential sensation-based description, or all?

  • Video techniques, birds eye view, hand held, stand...whats the view point

  • The standing "small dance" with gravity in a spot outside, to be filmed. A dance between sky and earth, with the body as a channel to allow the land to perform rather than the dancer

  • Which direction is Nz from Finland/Finland from NZ? A movement or gesture towards that direction.

This video is an edit of our Zoom improvisations and conversations, awkward, meaningful and silly.

Video of a 4 screen zoom improvisation, moving into a game of passing movement between the digital windows.
